(The argument)

The world is changing under every business. Not on a ten-year horizon. Now.

This is anchored in Investing Through Disruption, published by Angel Investors Bristol after five months of research. The view it produced is straightforward and hard to argue with: the wave of cognitive automation (AI) and physical automation (robotics) will have the biggest societal, economic and technological impact on humanity of any wave that’s come before it. Because the world is interconnected, that impact doesn’t stay contained to technology. It moves through labour markets, the economic environment and the geopolitical landscape, and it erodes the value propositions businesses have built their positions on.

The starting point for any serious business isn’t a plan. It’s a clear-eyed view of the world you’re actually walking into, economically and technologically, and what that means for you.

01The economic environment is changing under every business in this bracket. The businesses that get ahead of it start with an honest read of what's actually happening, not what they'd prefer to be happening.
02The technological landscape is eroding your value proposition whether you've noticed or not. What protected you yesterday, an expertise premium, a head start, a relationship, doesn't automatically protect you tomorrow. Defensibility has to be actively held.
03Most businesses respond to new technology bottom-up: which tools, which workflows. That's the wrong question. The real question is structural: how do you build a model for the world that's actually coming?
